2019 Scholarship Recipients

Andrew Berndt

Drake University
Andrew Berndt is a junior Actuarial Science major at Drake University from Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Having transferred from the University of Missouri in fall 2018, he is new to the Des Moines area. Over his collegiate career, he has achieved a cumulative 4.0 GPA. At Drake, Andrew is director of technology for Gamma Iota Sigma. He is member of the track and cross-country teams, specializing in the mile. During the summer of 2019, Andrew will be interning with Sammons Financial Group in West Des Moines. He has passed exam FM and will be taking exam P in May 2019. In his free time, he cares for his 3 crested geckos.

Mitchell Goetti just completed his sophomore year at Drake University as a double Major in Accounting and Finance, with a concentration in Actuarial Science. During the summer of 2018, he worked as an Accounting and Finance intern at Rice Lake Weighing Systems. During the summer of 2019, and into the fall, Mitchell will be interning with Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, IA. During the 2018-2019 school year, Mitchell served as Internal Vice President for the Drake College of business and Public Administration Ambassadors organization and was involved in many other clubs. Mitch hopes to begin taking CFA exams while finishing up college and plans to sit for the CPA after graduating in May of 2021.

Brianna Ringen is a sophomore at Drake University majoring in Actuarial Science and Accounting. She currently works at Budget Insurance as a licensed insurance agent selling auto policies through four different carriers. She specializes in SR-22 and difficult to insure situations. During the 2019-2020 school year she will be interning with Principal Financial Group. Brianna has her pilot’s license and enjoys flying in her free time, as well as drumming, attending car shows, and working on her classic truck with her father. She hopes to stay in the Des Moines area after graduation.

Josh Chen is a Finance and Marketing major and is obtaining a Risk Management and Insurance Certificate, as well as an International Business Certificate at the University of Iowa. During the summer of 2019, he is interning as a financial analyst for Amazon in Seattle. He is also an intern for the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council and a member of the Marketing Institute, where he works as a marketing consultant, making advertisement campaigns for a variety of real world clients. Josh has also interned cross-culturally in Milan, Italy where he worked for a fintech start-up specializing in blockchain technology.

Angela Fiore is a junior at the University of Iowa studying Actuarial Science, Business Administration, and Philosophy. She is interning during the summer of 2019 for a second year at Athene Annuity in West Des Moines, Iowa. During the 2018-2019 academic year, she was the Vice President of Industry Relations for the University of Iowa's chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, a risk management business fraternity. She has currently passed three actuarial exams and intends to remain in the Des Moines area upon graduation.

Maxwell Unmacht is entering his junior year at the University of Iowa majoring in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, along with a certificate in Risk Management and Insurance. During his time at Iowa he has been a part of Campus Activities Board and currently is on the Executive Boards of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) and the Actuarial Science Club. In the summer of 2019, he will be an actuarial intern at Athene USA in West Des Moines.

Parker Grant is a senior Actuarial Science and Data Analytics major at Drake University from Ankeny, Iowa. During the summer of 2017, he worked as an actuarial intern with Farm Bureau Life Insurance, and during the summer of 2018 he is working as a P&C actuarial intern with Nationwide Insurance. During the 2017-2018 school year he was Co-President of Drake’s chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international business fraternity focused on risk management, insurance, and actuarial science. He has currently passed 3 actuarial exams. After graduation he hopes to remain in the Des Moines area.

Adam Lathan just completed his sophomore year at Drake University and is majoring in Data Analytics, Actuarial Science, and Information Systems. He has completed internships with PolySystems in Chicago, Principal in Des Moines, and Farm Bureau Financial Services in West Des Moines. This summer he will serve as an actuarial intern with Humana in Louisville, KY. Adam has passed three actuarial exams. In his free time, Adam enjoys exercising, volunteering with animals, and exploring/playing in the Des Moines’ diverse music scene.

Jacob Kinnetz is currently a senior at the University of Iowa majoring in Finance, and pursuing a certificate in Risk Management & Insurance. In the summer of 2017, he was a financial advising intern at Mutual of Omaha, where he grew a passion for helping people manage their finances. In his free time he enjoys reading and learning about individual wealth management. This summer he is interning at TrueNorth, working in the employee benefits sector as an individual health intern.

Austin Lytle is pursuing a Finance degree with a Risk Management and Insurance Certificate at The University of Iowa. This summer, he is interning at Aegon Asset Management in Cedar Rapids. He also serves as the Vice President of Finance and Fundraising for Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS). Upon graduation, he hopes to find employment with an insurance company that shares his values of integrity and trust.

Kevin will be a fifth year senior at the University of Iowa pursuing a Finance degree with a Risk Management and Insurance Certificate from the Vaughn Institute. In his fifth year, he will also be competing for the University of Iowa in Track and Field specializing in the mile, with a PR of 4:07. He serves as the President of the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee where he is the liaison between the student-athlete body and the Big Ten. This past summer he worked with RBC Wealth Management and TransAmerica within their Retirement Planning division.

Nga Nhan is a junior Accounting major and Economics minor from Des Moines, Iowa. She currently attends Drake University where she is enrolled in the undergraduate program and the MAcc Program. She completed a summer internship at Meredith Corporation where she worked in the Finance and Accounting department. She is really excited to work in the Des Moines area and makes it a goal to remain in Iowa after graduation.

Ty Albrecht is a junior Actuarial Science major and Data Analytics minor at Drake University from Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. During the summer of 2017, he worked as an intern for Cintas, which is located in Grimes, Iowa. He also studied for his third actuarial exam, MFE, in July. He was excited to stay in Des Moines for the summer and hopes to make it his home after graduation.
Zachary Denny

Zach is currently attending the University of Iowa pursuing a major in Finance, a certificate in Risk Management and Insurance, and a minor in Spanish. He spent a semester in Alicante, Spain where he lived with a family and explored the culture. Following that, he spent a summer with BMO Harris Bank working with their Treasury and Payment Solutions team. This past stummer he interned with J.P. Morgan in New York, working within their Corporate and Investment Bank’s Risk Management team. His hopes are to work full-time with J.P. Morgan for several years before he shifts career paths, either into insurance or staying within Risk Management, but at a smaller firm.
